Abstract

The presence of giant vortices in accretion discs not only leads to an appealing process to explain planetesimal formation but also angular momentum transport. However, the mechanism by which such structures are created and sustained in discs is still strongly debated. In this contribution, I will present numerical evidence of a thermal instability in discs, the subcritical baroclinic instability, obtained using high resolution spectral methods. I will show that this instability leads to the formation of vortices and can also generate a significant angular momentum transport. The global behaviour of these structures (3D stability and migration) will also be discussed.
